Dehydration & Fluid Therapy for Dogs and Cats in Ware, MA
When a pet is vomiting, has diarrhea, isn’t drinking, or is living with a condition like kidney disease, they can lose fluids faster than they take them in. Dehydration makes pets feel worse and slows recovery. At FurBaby Medical Veterinary Practice, we assess your pet’s hydration and provide fluid therapy to help them bounce back.
Signs of Dehydration in Pets
- Dry, sticky, or tacky gums
- Sunken or dull-looking eyes
- Skin that is slow to spring back when gently lifted at the scruff
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Thick saliva or excessive panting
- Decreased urination or dark urine
Puppies, kittens, seniors, and small pets can become dehydrated quickly. If you notice these signs, call us the same day.
What Causes Dehydration?
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Not drinking enough water due to illness, pain, or stress
- Heat exposure or overexertion in hot weather
- Fever or infection
- Kidney disease, which is especially common in older cats
- Diabetes and other conditions that increase urination
How We Assess Your Pet’s Hydration
Dr. Santiago will examine your pet’s gums, eyes, skin elasticity, heart rate, and overall condition. Because dehydration usually has an underlying cause, we may also recommend in-house bloodwork and urinalysis to check electrolytes, kidney function, and blood sugar. Finding and treating the cause is just as important as replacing lost fluids.
Fluid Therapy Options
Fluid therapy replaces lost water and electrolytes, supports the kidneys, and helps your pet feel better faster. Depending on your pet’s needs, options include:
- Subcutaneous (SQ) fluids: fluids given under the skin during an outpatient visit. Your pet’s body absorbs them over several hours. This is ideal for mild to moderate dehydration
- At-home SQ fluids: for pets with chronic conditions such as kidney disease, we can teach you how to give fluids at home, with step-by-step guidance and supplies
- Intravenous (IV) fluids: for pets who are severely dehydrated or very ill, IV fluids may be needed. If your pet requires round-the-clock IV care and hospitalization, we’ll coordinate a transfer so treatment isn’t delayed
Keeping Your Pet Hydrated at Home
- Always provide fresh, clean water and clean bowls daily
- Place water bowls in several spots around the house
- Try a pet water fountain, which many cats prefer
- Add wet food to your pet’s diet for extra moisture
- Bring water on walks and limit activity on hot days
- Watch water intake closely when your pet is sick
Frequently Asked Questions About Dehydration & Fluid Therapy
Does fluid therapy hurt my pet?
Most pets tolerate subcutaneous fluids very well. They may feel a small pinch, and we use gentle handling to keep them calm and comfortable.
Why is there a lump under my pet’s skin after fluids?
That’s normal. The fluid pocket is absorbed over several hours. Sometimes the fluid moves down toward the legs or chest before it’s fully absorbed.
Can I learn to give fluids at home?
Yes. Many owners of cats with kidney disease give fluids at home. We’ll show you how, provide supplies, and stay available for questions.
Can I just encourage my pet to drink more instead?
For mild cases, increasing water and wet food may help. A pet who is vomiting or very dehydrated usually can’t catch up by drinking alone and needs fluid therapy.
How long does it take for a pet to recover from dehydration?
Many pets perk up within hours of fluid therapy. Full recovery depends on treating the underlying cause.
