Cryotherapy, also known as cryosurgery, uses extremely cold temperatures to freeze and destroy abnormal tissue. During the procedure, a controlled micro-jet of nitrous oxide is applied directly to the affected area. The intense cold destroys the unwanted tissue at the cellular level while preserving the surrounding healthy skin.
Because the cold temperature naturally numbs the area during treatment, cryotherapy is typically very well tolerated. In many cases, the procedure can be performed quickly during a routine veterinary visit.
Common Conditions Treated with Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy can be an excellent treatment option for a variety of minor skin growths and irritations affecting cats and dogs.
- Skin Tags and Warts: Removing growths that may become irritated during grooming or everyday activity.
- Small Benign Skin Tumors: Treating superficial masses that appear on the skin.
- Eyelid Masses: Addressing small growths around the eyes that may cause irritation.
- Cysts and Skin Lesions: Helping resolve localized skin issues quickly and safely.
Before recommending cryotherapy, our veterinarians perform a thorough exam to ensure the growth is appropriate for this treatment.
